As Baruch Sterman pointed out in a lecture on Tekhelet, the molecular difference between Tekhelet dye and plant indigo is that Tekhelet dye contains Bromine.
My hypothesis is just like soy milk helps plant indigo better resist UV fading effects of the sun, the Bromine in Tekhelet does an even better job of helping Tekhelet dyed wool resist the UV fading effects of the sun.
Of course it is only a hypothesis until rigorously tested in a lab.

Here's an open question: we know that both India indigo and woad/isatis are referred to as Kala Ilan. Woad has always been indigenous to Israel: India indigo hasn't. Does woad naturally fade over time? If that's the case then perhaps we might have found the answer: the chemical tests work with woad, and the roman royalty found a great substitute in India indigo. There is a professional woad "techeiles" dealer today. Perhaps one of us should ask her that question ?
